The letter codes for the Great War medals listed in the various service records are listed below.

| 1914StC | - | 1914 Star and Clasp | Service in France or Belgium between 5/8/1914 and 22/11/1914 under fire |
| St | - | 1914/1915 Star | Service in any theatre of the war between 5/8/1914 and 31/12/1915 unless eligible for the 1914 Star. |
| V | - | Victory Medal | Service with a unit in a theatre of war between 5/8/1914 and 11/11/1918 |
| B | - | British War Medal | Service in a theatre of war up to and including the official end of the war in 1920 |
Men who'd been in the armed forces from the first years of the war who receive the 1914 Star or the 1914/15 Star as appropriate plus both the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. The set of three was sometimes referred to somewhat irreverently as Pip, Squeak & Wilfred after three contemporary cartoon characters.

Two of the Sailor’s listed were awarded the 1914 Star for Service with the Royal Naval Division. ADM171/131 gives a little bit more information about them.
